Western Isles
The Western Isles has a population of approximately 30,000 with 75% of this on Lewis and Harris, 20% on North and South Uist and Benbecula, and 5% on the Isle of Barra. Strategic centres include Stornoway (Harris), Lochmaddy (North Uist), Balivanich (Benbecula), Lochboisdale (South Uist), and Castlebay (Barra).
The main source of income for the region is crofting, fishing, fish farming, fish processing, construction, quarrying and tourism. Self employment is high with lots of small businesses utilising traditional crafts and skills. There are many tourist related businesses, with the easy assess to the Islands by air or sea, with the strong support of the Islands' Tourist Board.
The Western Isles boast miles of stunning beaches with silver sand and crystal clear waters, second to none. Even with the increasing tourist activity, you will always think you have them to yourself.
